"My Romance"

Carmen McRaeは、言うまでもなく素晴らしい歌手だ。ただ、ぼくの場合は、彼女の歌うBillie Holidayのレパートリーをどうしても本人のものと比べてしまうので、Aにマイナスをつけてしまう。Billieは全く別格なのだから、Carmenには申し訳ないのだが。
というわけで、ぼくがCarmenの真価を理解するのは、Billieが歌わないような曲を聴くとき。例えば、"My Romance"。少しも奇を衒わず、丁寧に、しみじみと歌う。歌詞の一つ一つが、素直に胸にしみこんでくる。

この歌詞、not, not, no, noと続けておいて最後にbut youと来る。強調の見本のようだけれど、ありきたりの感じがしないのは、blue lagoonとか、Spainのcastleとか、いかにもロマンティックそうなイメージの喚起のしかたがうまいからなのだろうな。

（中学の英語で、not butの構文を勉強する時に使ったら、生徒たち喜んで覚えるかも。）
